FT-100D 60 Meter Mod

Hello guys,

I need the mod to allow the FT-100D to operate on the new 60 meter
frequencies. I've seen and tried the mod where you remove R6036, turn
the radio off, turn it on while holding the DWN and SET keys, tune so
some oddball UHF frequency, turn it off, hold the DWN and SET keys
and turn it on again and again tune to another oddball UHF frequency
etc etc. This does not work. I have tried it several times, I've
reset the radio back to factory defaults and everything else I can
think of and still no TX on 60 meters. This mod is dated 1999 and
perhaps is good for the FT-100, but it does not work on the FT-
100D. So, can anyone help me with accurate information for a mod that
allows 60 meter operation? Pictures along with the mod would be nice
but not essential. Thanks in advance for any help.

Johnny

Jonny,
Once you remove the resistor and do the power up switch the 100/D to
the CW mode. I have done 8-10 mods and never had one fail yet useing
CW to enter the 2 freqs you need to eneter. Also make sure you
follow the directions to the letter and do the power up the second
time as well. You may or may not see the HF on/UHF on flash on the
screen. I HAVE noticed that the older the 100 (more use it has seen)
the better chance you have of seeing thes on the display.
Try it useing CW and letmeknow if you need more help.
Take Care, God Bless

Hi guy's. I have this FT-100D for sale.
-----------
Yaesu FT-100D Near Mint condx, w/FC-20 Automatic Antenna
Tuner. It operates perfectly on the 160m thru 70cm bands
allmode. The tuner tunes 160m - 6m and tracks automaticaly.
The tuner powers from the radio. The tuner has two antenna
ports. Has great DSP. Recently purchased an FT-920 for the
shack so this rig has to go. I get along better with larger
radios because of my big fingers. Never mobile, NON-smoking,
NO issues NO mods done. This is one of the later ones
manufactured in the "D" series. Have Mic, Manual, Power
Cord, Bracket. Asking $700.00 plus S&H&Ins. CONUS. Thanx de

Thanks owned two. One was in the shop for the first year of it's life. When I got it back sold the second one I had purchased. This one still don't work properly. Mike races to full volume with the slightest tap, speaker plug dosn't work, fans run constantly after Yaesu did factory mods and it is so loud I have never used it. Yery Pissed at Yaesu after paying $1,200 each for them and not being able to get $500 used and one not fully functionsl.

No thanks.

Many of us mod the rigs so the fan runs constantly.
Not sure why that is a problem. A cooler rig means it
will last longer. The one I currently have replaced
the original fan with a larger one, just for that
reason.

Fans running constantly maybe not a problem for you but a fan noise level above an S-8 really limits the ability to use the radio. My radio sat in the closet since it came back from Yaesu since 2001. I brought it to Arizona with me because that's what it's for. Turned it on and can't hear people even on FM even over the fans without people 1/2 a mile away having to listen to it. I know replace the fans, they have never been used. Replace the radio is more likley.

I only watch the reflector for any new news and updates. I always thought Yaesu would come up with a real fix for the defects.

I gave up bashing Yaesu years ago and own a VX-1, VX-5R, VX-6R, VX-7R, VX-150 so for hand held they are fine. I was just taken advantage on a defective product line that everyone knows about and they tried to remedy with the D model and finally dropped the line because of the negative reputation it gave them. All the FT-100 radios should have been recalled and replaced. They were defective from the date of production. It was an engineering disaster to bring a radio to market to quickly to beat the competition. One of mine was at Yaesu twice resulting in the first year never being able to use it. Bought a second one in the mean time and had it back there too. Sold it but I know I sold the wrong one.

Conceptually it's a great idea functionally it stinks.

Yea I care about the fans having to run all the time it's an engineering defect using $6 fans to correct. In reality the heat sink should have been many times the size radiating the heat from exposed fins the size of the bottom of the rig so fans would never run. It's a mobile rig intended to be used in a confined area and noise and heat is defenatly not an advantage.

If I would have known this was a reflected message I would have never responded because it's the same old cow dung that has been beat to death since it's introduction in 2001.

No responce needed and this thread should be ended hear. I thought this was a personal mailing not a reflector message.

THose are interesting observations, but what would you
replace it with? I have had both a FT857 and an Icom
706mKIIG, and both are very inferior radios. They are
ok if you like to listen to S8 static all the time on
HF. They both have very noisy receivers, whereas the
FT100D has one of the quietest receivers in a mobile
radio, and a NB that actually works. I also had an
Alinco DX70TH, and its NB was useless. It also lacked
DSP and a built in keyer.

Now I have used these models 98% of the time in the
base. Maybe they are completely different in the
mobile setting, but I thought the FT857 was probably
the worst radio I have ever owned. It made the FT847
look good, and that is pretty difficult to do. I was
over at a friends house today trying something out on
his FT857D. On 20 meters, with the IPO off, he was
seeing a constant noise level of S7 (on its impossible
to read meter). My FT100D shows a noise level of S1
if the band gets noisy. Turning on the IPO on his rig
brought the noise level down to an S4, which is still
unacceptable. If I had to listen to a S7 noise level
all the time I would find another hobby.

Now I hear that the Kenwood TS480 is a great mobile
rig. Maybe that is the way to go. Or maybe a TS50.
I have never had one of those, but did have a TS60.
It had an excellent receiver, but a pretty useless NB
for mobile work. Didn't do much at all on ignition
noise.

If you want HF/VHF/UHF in one rig, your choices are
pretty limited. The TS2000 is by far the best. I
would have another in a minute if I could afford one,
but right now I can't. However, for all of its early
problems, I have found the FT100D to be the best of
the HF/VHF/UHF mobile rigs. I have run them in both
HF and VHF contests (850 QSOs on 1 in the 2002 10
meter contest), used them on satellites, made a 2
meter moonbounce QSO on one, worked over 200 DXCC
countries, etc.

In my opinion, whoever designed the FT857 as the
FT100D replacement should be fired immediately, if not
executed. Yes, Yaesu did discontinue the FT100D, but
it was probably about costs more than their
reputation. The VHF/UHF final was no longer
available. They could have redesigned the rig for
another transistor, but for them it was probably
cheapter to take the FT817 board, add the 100 watt
final, and drop it in the FT857 chassis. That is
essentially what they did with the FT897.

The fact that used FT100Ds go for roughly the same
price as they were selling new says something about
the quality of this model. And at least Yaesu did
discover the grounding mod and fix the radios that
didn't have that one done. Other manufacturers seem
much more resistant to admit and fix their mistakes.

Sorry you feel this way. I performed the mod, the radio simply would not
reset. Never saw the "R ON" message or any other (it DOES give this message
in it's stock form WITHOUT the mod, since I put the zero ohm resistor back).
I have simply decided to just replace the radio with one that works as well
and I have already modified, my Icom IC-706MKIIG.

I even experimented and put the zero ohm resistor in position #1 (where
there was none) to see if that worked but it did not, so the radio is back
stock. I even had another tech over this past weekend, and he also has an
FT-100D, which he has modified (using the same mod) and he could not get any
results. So this radio must have some firmware changes that inhibits this
mod and prevents it from working. I am going to contact Yaesu to see what
(If anything) they will tell me.

Johnny

I too had mucho problems with the mod. Probably have the same one as you dated 4-7-99. After futzing with it for HOURS, I went searching for FT100D mods all over the net and the archives of this group. Found a mod listing in this group's archive (THANKS!!!) that was slightly different where-as during the r on and the HF on steps, you make sure you return the operating mode to FM before power down. So do the down and step and power on mode, set 375.72727 using CW or SSB mode to do the step, return the mode to FM then power down. Do the same for the next step making sure the mode is FM before power down. After hours, this worked and I have the listed frequency ranges. So you know, my radio is new with a s/n range of 2M450xxx. Also, I NEVER saw the r on, HF on or the vU on indication.

Good Luck with it!
