FT100D FLASHING FREQUENCY

Hello

This is Horey, VU2HFR from Calcutta, India. I have had the FT100D for the last 10 years. My brother VU2KFR and I have repaired the radio thrice during this period. Once we replaced a faulty 2SC2714 transistor in the driver chain, once we had to replace the control card after a lightning strike and recently had to replace the MRF255 power FETs. Very recently the radio is down again.

This time the problem is a flashing frequency display. After switching on the radio after a few months the radio appeared dead. No RX or TX except a flashing frequency display on all bands. All other functions such as frequency change, mode change, DSP settings can be changed. Only the frequency display on all bands keeps on flashing and there is no audio. The S meter bars are all on and the RF gain / squelch control has no effect on the S meter display. I tried re-fixing the flat cables going to the control head as suggested in this group without success. Somewhere I have read of a similar problem due to VXO unlock. Any help / suggestions in this regard would be welcome.

I had a similar problem with a flashing display on TS 530, after not unisg the unit for some time. I put the unit on a variac and very slowly incresed the supply voltage. This reformed the electrolytic capacitors and now all is fine.

You may also check your internal battery, to see if it needs replacement.

Hi Horey VU2HFR,

I am having a problem on my display readout ever since some static
electricity discharged onto it when I touched the radio with the power
off. The lcd readout is not fully clear to read, but the radio works fine,
just difficult to see what's on the diaply. I tried a hard reset but it
didn't fix it.

I see in your post, that you replaced a transistor in the driver chain, a
control card, and a power FETs. How did you know they were the problems?
Is there a technical manual online or paper that you use to diagnosis? I'd
like to determine the issue in my FT-100D and repair it.

Thanks,

It seems that LCD display needs to be replaced. When we purchased the radio back in 2002 we had also purchased the service manual (which in hindsight was a good option) without which it would not have been possible to service the radio. I also later received a soft copy of the service manual on a CDROM from a friend.

I have the same in pdf format but the file size is around 32 MB.

Further to my post below regarding the flashing display problem in my FT100D, I think I have located a fault in the LO module. I checked for voltages at TP2001 on the LO module for the VCO (varactor tuning voltages). It was 0.1 volt and there is no 1st LO output at J2003. Upon feeling for hot components I found that Q2043 the wideband MMIC amplifier at the 1st LO output is getting very hot. It seems the chip is faulty and needs to be replaced. The chip is the NEC uPC1679G silicon monolithic integrated circuit designed as medium output power amplifier with a power gain of 21.5 dB at 500 MHz.

I have looked for the same but cannot find a source for this device. Any help regarding this would be welcome.

It's readily available from many Hong Kong suppliers but you may have to say you want to buy a sample first as they mostly deal with supplying large numbers
