Years ago, I tried to build my own version. I used a couple of pieces of gold plated, edge connector cut from an old plug-in circuit board to make the connections to the control head and radio body. I was never able to get consistent pressure on the contacts so it was not at all reliable. My FT-100 is now in my go-box with the head permanently plugged on so no need for the extension kits.

I recently completed a homebrew YSK-100. There are two single sided PCBs. Each PCB has a RJ-11 connector to allow a standard RJ-11 6 pin cable to be used as the extension cable. The faceplate PCB uses a spring loaded connector similar to the connector found on the radio. The PCBs connect to the faceplace and radio using the existing mounting holes. It certainly is homebrew in appearance, but it will get the job done.

If anyone is interested I can post pictures and put a kit together. The kit would have two PCBs, two RJ-11 6 pin cables, one RJ-11 6 pin coupler for mic, and mounting screws. The kit would cost $40 plus shipping.

I've made a home brew replacement for the ysk-100. I've designed two simple PCBs with rj-11 connectors. One attaches to the radio. The other attaches to the faceplate. The faceplate PCB uses a spring loaded connector similar to the connector on the radio itself. Both PCBs use the manufacture mounting holes. Mic cable is already a 6 pin rj-11, so an extention cable is used for that. Speaker cable is standard 3.5 mm headphone extension cable.

I'm working on a version with rj-45 connectors and 3.5mm audio jacks to pass radio control and audio over a standard Ethernet cable. If there is any interest I can make up a homebrew kit with cables and screws.

I've uploaded pictures of my homebrew FT-100 separation kit to the group.

This version of the kit includes a radio interface board and a faceplate interface board. Both the radio interface board and the faceplate interface board include an RJ-50 10Pin connector which will accept an RJ-45 8Pin cable, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. The radio speaker output is connected to the radio interface board headphone jack using a 3.5mm male-to-male cable included in the kit. The remote speaker is connected to the faceplate interface board using a user supplied 3.5mm headphone cable. So, radio control and mono audio is carried over a single CAT5 cable. The mono audio output is connected to both Left and Right audio pins on the faceplate interface board. Since the microphone uses an RJ-11 (really RJ-12) connector and 6Pin cable, the kit includes a 6Pin coupler and 6Pin cable which is pretty much exactly what was used in the factory Yaesu YSK-100 kit.

The kit Bill of Materials:

1x FT-100 Radio Interface board

1x FT-100 Faceplate Interface board

4x M2.6 6mm scews (faceplate)

4x M2.5 10mm scews (radio)
1x RJ-11 coupler (mic extention)

1x RJ-11 25ft 6 Pin cable (mic extention)

1x RJ-45 25ft 8 Pin cable (control / audio extension)

1x 6ft 3.5mm male-to-male audio cable (speaker extension)

1x instructions

The cables add a substantial amount to the bill of materials in terms of cost, so I can't quite make the $40 price for a full kit. With all of the above cables the cost of the kit is $60 plus shipping.

The kit may work with other radios which used the same Yaesu CT-5L controller extension cable, but I have only tested on the FT-100.

Anyone who is interested in purchasing the kit, contact me at ***@arrl.net or ***@hotmail.com to get a final shipping cost, payment, etc.

I have successfully been able to remote my faceplate from the unit with home brew cabling. There are pictures of my installation and cabling in the photos section of this group. I use it quite regularly.

Nicely done Joe!
Good work.
When my current YSK-100 croaks I'll hunt you down.
I'm on my second one BTW.
The screws are a bugger as well :)
