Discussion:
ATAS 120 Disassembly instructions?

My ATAS 120 is acting up....it refuses to tune until I gently (yes,
gently) tap the base of the antenna. When I do, the antenna will tune
fine...until I hit a bump or the antenna gets jarred....

I've changed the coax and mount and have an excellent chassis ground.,
so I'm fairly sure that the problem is internal to the ATAS and not the
mount or grounding. I did a search on the web and did not find
anything...so I would appreciate some help....

Does anyone have the disassembly instructions for the antenna...or has
successfully disassembled it?....

Thanks!

Lou,

Funny you should ask today....

I had the exact same problem..Antenna would tune then not...etc.

The base of the antenna is a MATCHING SECTION with a coil and several
capacitors under the plastic cover... Ready for the replacement
price: $259.00....GULP

Anyway....if you carefully remove the plastic around the bottom pin
(you can see it but can't get to it without plastic removal) then
pull the pin out... the bottom will unscrew and you can then get to
the coil by sliding down the plastic cover.. It will break the top
piece of plastic as well, but easy to reseal.. The coil will have a
bad solder joint on either the top or bottom of the form.

Did mine and it works great again..

Mine too....and I've really gone the extra mile for a good ground to the truck frame!!

So.....before I throw this thing in the trash, I'm try the disassemble trick. Yaesu should be embarrassed with this product!!

Jist me two cents..../73

Let me know how you make out!.....

Isn't there a way of pushing out the pins without removing the
plastic? Has anyone try a center punch?

Has anyone asked Yaesu if they can provide a procedure to do what you want

I spoke with the tech support group. They say the matching network
is 'non-repairable'. But explained to me how to take it apart and
repair it. The two pins do not go completely through...they just pin
the threads of the upper and bottom sections to the coil form.

I have used the Dremel tool to remove a little of the plastic around the
pins. I then notched the pin a little with the cutter wheel on the Dremel.
I can then use miniature pliers to get hold of the pin and remove it. On
all the ones at the hamfest that I have bought the wire is broken from the
solder. I re-solder with Silver solder for strength and make sure it is
not pulled tight so movement will break it again. Most often it is barely
soldered in the first place. Reassemble and put in the pins.

Good Luck

Danny,

I *finally* got the pin out!....

I tried just about everything including heat...and it wouldn't
budge....I was just about to give up and looked on my tool bench and
saw a pair of heavy duty side cutters....I figured, what the heck...

Using the base as a wedge, I gripped the pin and got it to come
out....

The coil looked good...the solder joints looked OK...but I heated
them up anyway...put a bit more on them...and reassembled the base...

It tuned but the true test will be tomorrow when I go for a ride and
hit a few bumps...

Quite honestly, the coil connections looked good...I'm beginning to
think the center pin connection...the one that goes into the coil
form and somehow makes connection to the center pin is the
culprit...but there is no solder connection at the tip of the
connector...so I guessing it is a crimp...

If that is the case, I'm at a loss as to what I can do...but...lets'
see what tomorrow brings!...

73...and thanks for taking the time to help...

I have found that a lot of times the center pin has spread out and is not
making good contact with connector. I put some brass shim stock around the
outside of the pin to keep it from getting loose. Maybe the antenna or coax
is moving enough to spread it out.

Good Luck

That is one of the problems that I have run into. On the mount, the center
part where the center pin of the antenna inserts into will spread apart over
time. I had a mount that did this to me. The symptoms were: would not tune
(sometimes in only one direction, sometimes would not move at all) or I
would get an intermittent HSWR when transmitting. I spent two different
campout weekends trying to solve this issue. Even went as far as installing
the antenna on a fellow ham's trailer with his ft-100d (which would work).
First thought that is was a power issue (the battery voltage was around
12.2v). During the second campout I replaced the mount with a new one (the
old one did not look to good), reattached the antenna and it tuned to 40m
through 70cm and everything in between, even with the battery voltage down
to 12v.

It looks like any movement via traveling or even wind could force the
antenna to spread the center fingers of the mount. Good luck.
